On International Women's Day 2022, NairoBits looked back at its work on gender equality. For more than 20 years its classes were evenly split between girls and boys through affirmative action. This time girls made up 54% of applicants on their own.
NairoBits credits community outreach, alumni stories, shorter programmes and safe learning spaces for the change. One student, Anna Odhiambo, finished second in her graduating class and was named Bits Developer of the Year. She also completed an international data project on mental health and anxiety.
The article notes that economic progress does not remove the barriers women face in their health and social lives. It names adolescents, women living with HIV, women living in poverty, LGBTQ women and women with disabilities as groups with particular needs.
Through its Youth in Action and Right Here Right Now programmes, NairoBits works in communities to protect women's rights, including their sexual and reproductive health and rights.
It also announced three partnerships: with SWIFT, with the SENSE Foundation Brussels on Girls Go, which aims to reach 1,000 young women with technology and employability skills, and with the British Council on Skills for Inclusive Digital Participation.
